Modern Arabic Workshop

At Leyli Art Association, we believe that art is a universal language with the power to build bridges between cultures. In line with this belief, one of our key initiatives is the Modern Arabic Workshop. This workshop offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to learning the Arabic language, designed for participants of all levels and backgrounds.

Our Modern Arabic Workshop not only focuses on developing language skills but also provides participants with a deep understanding of Arabic culture and art. Spoken by over 400 million people across the Middle East and North Africa, Arabic is a language rich in history and cultural significance. As part of our mission to promote cross-cultural dialogue and understanding, we view the learning of Arabic as an important tool in fostering stronger cultural and artistic connections.

Purpose and Objectives of the Workshop

The primary goal of the Modern Arabic Workshop is to equip participants with both written and spoken Arabic language skills. In addition to language acquisition, the workshop emphasizes the cultural and artistic aspects of Arabic, offering a holistic approach to language learning.

The key objectives of the workshop are:

  • To teach participants the Arabic alphabet and fundamental grammar rules,
  • To provide practical language skills that can be used in daily life and artistic endeavors,
  • To foster cultural awareness and appreciation for Arabic art and literature,
  • To facilitate access to Arabic sources for academic or professional purposes.

Workshop Structure and Content

The workshop runs for 16 weeks, with two hours of instruction per week. It is designed for beginners and advanced learners alike, with a curriculum that progressively builds language proficiency through reading, writing and practical application. Below is the outline of the workshop content:

  1. Arabic Alphabet (2 Weeks): Learning the basics of the Arabic alphabet and writing.
  2. Introductions and Basic Expressions (1 Week): Common expressions used in daily life and introductions.
  3. Singular, Dual, and Plural Forms (1 Week): Understanding the singular, dual and plural forms of nouns.
  4. Nominal Sentences (2 Weeks): Structure and use of nominal sentences in Arabic.
  5. Verbal Sentences (1 Week): Basic rules of verbal sentences in Arabic.
  6. Past Tense Verb Conjugation (2 Weeks): Conjugation and usage of verbs in the past tense.
  7. Present and Future Tense Verb Conjugation (2 Weeks): Conjugation and usage of verbs in the present and future tenses.
  8. Comparison of Nominal and Verbal Sentences (1 Week): Comparing and contrasting nominal and verbal sentences.
  9. Sentence Construction with Past and Present Verbs (2 Weeks): Developing skills in sentence construction using past and present verbs.
  10. Midterm and Final Exams (2 Weeks): Assessment of knowledge gained throughout the course.

Instructor: A. Çağlar Deniz

The workshop is led by A. Çağlar Deniz, an expert in the Arabic and Ottoman languages. Born in Antep in 1980, Deniz completed his undergraduate studies at Selçuk University in Theology, earned his master’s degree from Gazi University and completed his PhD in Sociology at Istanbul University. Deniz has extensive experience teaching Arabic and Ottoman Turkish and has served as a visiting scholar and lecturer at universities in Turkey and abroad, including the University of Delaware and Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University.

In addition to his academic achievements, Deniz has contributed to several artistic and cultural projects and is known for his work in civil society, particularly in the areas of refugee rights and religious freedoms. His expertise in Arabic and Ottoman texts, as well as his work as an author and translator, make him a valuable guide for those learning the language. With Deniz’s leadership, participants will not only learn the language but also gain deep insights into Arabic culture and art.
